Disposable Mask

Disposable masks, also called surgical masks, are most commonly used by doctors and nurses while treating patients to keep the operating rooms sterile and preventing germs from the mouth and nose of a wearer from contaminating a patient during surgery. These are loose-fitting face masks that cover your nose, mouth, and chin.

Disposable face masks protect from large particle droplets of bodily fluids originated when a person sneezes or coughs. These large droplets can carry infectious viruses and can lead to the spread of an infection.

As the name suggests, these masks are a kind of use and throw medical device, which is disposed of after the use in surgery. Disposable face masks are mostly flat and rectangular in shape with folds. They have a metal strip on top which can be formed to your nose and elastic bands to hold the mask in place by looping around your ears.

These masks are made with non-woven fabric, which has better filtration and air permeability. Polypropylene is the most commonly used material to make them, but masks can also be made from polystyrene, polyester, etc. These masks are made in different thicknesses and different ability to filter which based on ease of breathing and  how well the masks protect you.

Even though they have a metal strip on top which can be formed to your nose, these are fairly loose fitted and often not effective in protecting particles from sides. Also the mesh in the mask is not very fine, thus it cannot protect from very small particles like the novel coronavirus which are smaller than germs. Also it does not protect eyes from any transmission of infections.

With the spread of novel coronavirus, many disease control organizations are now recommending everyone to wear masks. As a precautionary method it is better to wear a mask when in public during the times of coronavirus pandemic. Although disposable masks are effective in protecting from large droplets, it cannot prevent coronavirus particles as they are very small in size. A. But it can be used in public where social distancing is hard to maintain and where there is unavailability of high protection masks.
